CHAPTER 5
He was a fool to go in. The thought of both of Sheena and Estelle in the same place made him nervous and angry. He inhaled, settling himself, and determined to not explode. Grasping the door handle, he pulled it wide and entered the diner.
His gaze fell on the trio at the corner booth. Relief washed over him. Nadine was with Estelle. At least, she wasnât alone.
The eyes of the locals followed his movements across the room. He halted a few feet from their table.
âThere you are,â Sheena said, her voice smooth. âWe were just discussing you, and your new employer, Ms. Moore, introduced herself.â
Employer? Neil switched his gaze to Estelle, not taking issue with the term. He had to stay controlled. He tipped his hat at her and Nadine, ignoring Sheena. âLadies.â
Sheena bristled. Lips pressed tight, she gave a rough snort.
âHowâs Beckum?â Nadine asked her. âHope all those calendar profits are going to good use.â
Heâd always liked Nadine and had to restrain a laugh.
Sheena tossed her head. âIâm headed to visit the dear soul. I thought Iâd take her some lunch and shouldnât waste any more time. Some of us donât have time to play around.â Standing taller, she aimed her gaze at him. âMaybe if they worked harder, their home wouldnât be at risk.â
Worked harder?
âListen, here, you,â Neil snapped. âYou wouldnât know the meaning of hard work if it bit you on that fat butt of yours.â
A giggle from a child at a nearby table capped off his remark.
âIâm glad you remembered,â Sheena returned. âYou certainly were on it enough. Mine and everyone elseâs.â
His stomach lurched, his appetite taking flight.
Estelle coughed, and Neilâs guilt amplified. He knew better than to antagonize Sheena. What sheâd said was true. Heâd been with her and dozens of others.
âI reckon I ought to take my lunch to go,â he said, quietly. âLike you said, thereâs work to do.â Neil revolved, but instead of heading for the counter, he stomped out the door, not looking back.
The embarrassment was all his now. At some point, heâd have to look Estelle in the eye, knowing sheâd heard the truth.
